College Admissions – Felicity Huffman…Does the Punishment Equal the Crime?

In a Boston federal court, sentencing has begun for participants in the Operation Varsity Blues scandal that made national headlines in March, 2019.

Why is this evil?

People of privilege using illegal methods and bribes to secure the college admission of their children in elite colleges and universities.

Editor’s Viewpoint:

The unfortunate college admissions scandal involving people of privilege including celebrities such as Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin never had to happen.

There are all kinds of tutorial programs, private tutors, and the like available to assist students who are educationally and/or emotionally challenged by taking college entrance examinations. 

The College Board and the American College Testing Service both offer all types of accommodations, prep courses, and support systems to assist potential candidates in achieving the necessary college entrance scores.

And that’s what just so puzzling about this entire scandal. 

These parents had the financial means to hire private tutors to help their students prepare to take these exams.

I wouldn’t be surprised if even their privileged high schools offered some form of college test preparation classes. 

Both the testing services and the universities in question would have been happy to share with these parents’ legal methods and strategies to enhance their children’s chances of receiving the admissions placement of their dreams.

Yet, instead, they chose to use illegal methods and bribery.

Operation Varsity Blues mirrors the contemptible state we find ourselves today in Trump’s America.

Let’s hope that jail time is a major lesson learned not only by Felicity Huffman, but others who think first to cheat instead of seeking legitimate ways and methods to accomplish educational goals for their children.

BTW – Does the punishment actually fit the crime?  Think about it before you answer!
